Ripple Molding #424-52

A steady, rolling ripple across a broad, nearly 1 1/4" face: the classic Dutch Golden Age frame molding, knife-scraped in solid hardwood.

Ripple molding #424-52 is nearly 1 1/4" wide and nearly 13/32" high. Choose maple, cherry, or walnut below. Each stick is 5 feet long.

The profile

From the sight edge out: astragal, bead, ogee, ovolo, and bead. The astragal and bead give the sight edge a crisp, beaded line, the ogee sweeps across the middle of the face, and the ovolo and outer bead round it off. The ripple runs through the whole profile, so every member rises and falls together, with crests about 3/8" apart and about 1/16" deep. That is enough to catch the light and throw a soft shadow, the way the 17th-century Dutch and Flemish frames do. It runs in an old master cadence: no two waves are quite alike, each varying slightly in length and depth, as the ripples do on period frames.

Ways to use it

• As the main molding of a Dutch-style frame, mitered and applied to a base frame
• As a wide cap or panel molding, or combined with a narrower ripple at the sight edge
• On mirrors, cabinet doors, and casework that call for an antique look

Details

Images are true-to-profile renderings in raw maple; cherry and walnut are cut to the same profile. Like the period originals, each stick shows small variations from the knife and hand finishing. That is part of its character.
