Bands of fine ripple broken by quiet, plain stretches across a 27/32" face: a lively skip pattern in the Dutch Golden Age tradition, knife-scraped in solid hardwood.

Ripple molding #236-10 is 27/32" wide and about 9/32" high. Choose maple, cherry, or walnut below. Each stick is 5 feet long.

The profile

From the sight edge out: fillet, bead, fillet, torus, and fillet. A rounded bead at the sight edge and a broad torus behind it, each set off by flat fillets, give the face two strong, rolling members that throw soft shadows. The ripple runs through the whole profile in bands, with plain stretches between them; within each band the crests are about 1/8" apart and about 1/32" deep. The pauses give the molding a measured, staccato rhythm that sets it apart from a steady ripple. It runs in an old master cadence: no two waves are quite alike, each varying slightly in length and depth, as the ripples do on period frames.

Ways to use it

• As the main molding of a small to mid-sized Dutch-style frame, mitered and applied to a base frame
• As the sight-edge molding of a wider frame, or paired with other ripple profiles to build it up
• On mirrors, panels, and boxes that call for an antique look

Details

Images are true-to-profile renderings in raw maple; cherry and walnut are cut to the same profile. Like the period originals, each stick shows small variations from the knife and hand finishing. That is part of its character.
