Bands of crisp ripple broken by quiet, plain stretches across a 27/32": a lively skip pattern in the Dutch Golden Age tradition, knife-scraped in solid hardwood.
Ripple molding #235-84 is 27/32" wide and nearly 1/2" high. Choose maple, cherry, or walnut below. Each stick is 5 feet long.
The profile
From the sight edge out: five stepped beads, ovolo, and torus. Five beads climb from the sight edge in steps, each catching its own line of light, before an ovolo and a full torus round off the high back edge, so the whole face steps down toward the picture. The ripple runs through the whole profile in bands, with plain stretches between them; within each band the crests are about 1/4" apart and about 1/32" deep. The pauses give the molding a measured, staccato rhythm that sets it apart from a steady ripple. It runs in an organic cadence: a steady rhythm, each wave a little different in length and depth, like hand-made period frames.
Ways to use it
- As the main molding of a Dutch-style frame, mitered and applied to a base frame
- As a stepped cap or liner that builds depth down toward the picture
- On mirrors, cabinet doors, and casework that call for an antique look
