Ripple Molding #202-76

A steady, crisp ripple across a full 3/4" face: the classic Dutch Golden Age frame molding, knife-scraped in solid hardwood.

Ripple molding #202-76 is 3/4" wide and about 9/32" high. Choose maple, cherry, or walnut below. Each stick is 5 feet long.

The profile

From the sight edge out: ovolo, quirk, bead, quirk, and torus. The ovolo rounds the sight edge, a quirked bead runs down the middle of the face, and the torus gives the outer edge a full, rolling finish. The ripple runs through the whole profile, so every member rises and falls together, with crests about 1/4" apart and 1/32" deep. That is enough to catch the light and throw a soft shadow, the way the 17th-century Dutch and Flemish frames do. It runs in a regular cadence, the waves repeating evenly along the stick for a crisp, uniform rhythm.

Ways to use it

• As the sight-edge molding of a Dutch-style frame, mitered and applied to a base frame
• As a cap or liner, or paired with other ripple profiles to build up a wider frame
• On mirrors, panels, boxes, and casework that call for an antique look

Details

Images are true-to-profile renderings in raw maple; cherry and walnut are cut to the same profile. Like the period originals, each stick shows small variations from the knife and hand finishing. That is part of its character.
